HMHC is a proud to be a founding member and now coordinating a collaborative community power forum recognising that partnership working and local experiences create local ideas for lasting positive change.
A Community Priority Setting Programme with VOCAL and the James Lind Alliance facilitating residents, patients, clinicians and partners to work collaboratively to identify local health research priorities. The PSP was funded by the National Institute of Health Research.
For 10-years HMHC has been at the forefront of food insecurity responses developing a ‘more than food’ response to food insecurity working with residents, housing partners and Manchester Health & Care Commissioning. Today, we continue to deliver Gorton Grocer and share our expertise across networks and partnerships.
Commissioned by Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust, we cooked up homemade nutritious meals and provided a safe space for people living with mental health conditions at the in-house cafe of No93 Wellbeing Centre, Harpurhey, and provided a Manchester wide not-for-profit catering service.
Our Learning Store is about first and next steps learning, combining our community, food and health expertise including our popular Level 2 Community Food Worker Award (NCFE). More than 100 people have achieved a level 2 qualification helping Manchester residents onto the learning and work ladder and out of poverty.
Cancer and Us- Our award-winning partnership with VOCAL and residents. The conversations helped to break down barriers to talking about cancer through grassroots engagement, hands on activities and partnership working. This neighbourhood approach continues to have impact on research and neighbourhood health priorities.
Funding from One Manchester converted our Gorton Grocer space into a community food hub for community led food projects including the amazing Across Ummah.
Gorton Central is a digital hub providing free Sky Up public Wi-Fi, technology devices and volunteer support to support residents with their digital inclusion needs.
Rich Browning, CEO, is a founding member and current vice-chairperson of Manchester Food Board bringing food insecurity and community practice expertise to Manchester’s sustainable food approaches and strategies.
New for 2024, working with and funded by Southway Housing, the Gorton AIP is creating new age-friendly opportunities for older residents, meeting local needs and health priorities. The AIP builds upon our expertise in coproducing resident-led older people programmes.
Funded by Our Manchester, OPeNS older-people programmes supported the expansion of existing projects in the Hulme neighbourhood and were part of an amazing consortium bringing a closed community centre back to life – the Beacon Centre in Clayton, now a loved community asset.
In 2024, HMHC participated in the SSE’s Scale-Up, a peer learning programme for improving the sustainability of social organisations and growing income so we can do more great work. And is now a proud to be an SSE fellow.
Our CEO Rich Browning is a Manchester Biomedical Research Centre Governance Board Member providing insights into effective Patient and Public Engagement and Involvement (PPIE) approaches for inclusive health research, bring lasting change for diagnosis, treatment and care.
Continuing our work with housing associations, in 2023 we researched and completed a food poverty review providing recommendations for adopting a food systems approach to improving food security for Wythenshawe residents.
The GMLPN is a network of over 115 learning providers across the city region. HMHC’s Hollie Walsh is a member of the Advisory Board, offering insight and shaping decision making to further the impact of the network.
In 2023 we completed a community asset transfer for a pre-loved but well-worn community centre and Gorton Central was born. With funding from The National Lottery and the Department of Levelling Up we have completed a capital programme of refurbishment creating the ‘modern community centre’.
HMHC recognises the links between good employment and good health and is proud to a member of the Charter. HMHC are proud winners of the Charter’s Good Employment Award for ‘best for health and wellbeing – SME' 2024.
HMHC is a founding community partner of the Big Life Be-Well programme offering a gateway to long-term change for residents experiencing multiple life and health challenges.
We continues to adopt and embed trauma responsive approaches into our work and work collaboratively to develop a neighbourhood network, working with Manchester City Council and partners.
